Step-by-Step Guide: Connecting PayPal to Your Online Store
Don’t worry if you’re not very tech-savvy—just follow these simple steps, and you’ll have PayPal up and running in your store in no time!
1. Log in to the PayPal Developer Site
Go to https://developer.paypal.com
Click the “Log in to Dashboard” button at the top right.
Sign in using your PayPal account details (the same one you use to manage your money).
2. Choose Test Mode or Live Mode
You can connect PayPal in test mode (called Sandbox) to make sure everything is working before customers see it.
You’ll see two tabs: Sandbox and Live.
Choose Sandbox first so you can test things safely.
Later, you can repeat the steps using Live to start receiving real payments.
*Tip: Always test first! It helps avoid surprises later.
3. Create a New App
Scroll down to the “REST API apps” section.
Click the “Create App” button.
4. Fill Out the App Details
Give your app a name (for example: My Store). This is just for you—your customers won’t see it.
Under App Type, choose Merchant.
Select the PayPal account you want to use (usually, there’s just one listed).
Click “Create App”.
5. Copy Your PayPal Keys
After creating the app, you’ll be taken to a screen showing your Client ID.
Copy the Client ID and paste it into the “PayPal Client ID” box in your store’s settings.
Below that, look for a section called “Secret”. Click “Show”, then copy and paste that into the “PayPal Secret” box in your store.
6. Enable Payments
Make sure the checkbox that says “Accept payments” is ticked. This tells PayPal that you want this app to handle purchases.
7. Place a Test Order
Try buying something from your store using test mode to ensure everything works.
If it does, go back to step 2, click the Live tab, and repeat the same steps.
You’ll need to create a second app (for real payments).
Copy and paste the new Live Client ID and Secret into your store’s settings.
All done! You’ve now connected PayPal to your store. Once in Live mode, customers can pay you directly through PayPal.
